This novel had the same strong sense of place - not Venice obviously, but it makes you feel as though you really know the area of the east coast of England where the story is set. Inspector Harry Nelson reminded me of Leon's Brunetti - both a little out of shape, gruff, brusque but deep thinkers. It reminded me a little of the Donna Leon series. What other book might you compare The Crossing Places to and why? If you could sum up The Crossing Places in three words, what would they be? Creepy pagan goings-on on the Norfolk mud flats
